Sweltzer Creek Pedestrian Bridge Replacement – Cultus Lake Park

Interior Marine Construction (IMC) was contracted to replace the aging timber pedestrian bridge spanning Sweltzer Creek in Cultus Lake Park. The original timber structure had reached the end of its service life, showing significant deterioration that posed safety risks for park visitors, cyclists, and local residents.

The new bridge design delivers a long-term, low-maintenance solution built to withstand the demands of a high-use recreational area. The structure features a fully engineered aluminum frame, selected for its exceptional corrosion resistance, structural longevity, and ability to perform reliably in wet, forested environments. To further enhance durability and safety, the walking surface was upgraded to fibreglass-reinforced polymer (FRP) decking, a material known for its superior strength-to-weight ratio, slip resistance, and resistance to rot and UV degradation.

These materials not only extend the overall lifespan of the bridge but also reduce long-term environmental impact. Aluminum and FRP require significantly less maintenance than treated timber, eliminating the need for chemical preservatives and minimizing ongoing material replacement. This results in a safer, more sustainable crossing that protects the surrounding creek ecosystem while improving the user experience for decades to come.

IMC is proud to support Cultus Lake Park with an updated, environmentally responsible pedestrian crossing that enhances public safety and community connectivity.
